Your home’s deck is only as safe as what’s beneath it. On a recent inspection this deck was observed to have a number of defects including the use of decking screws to secure the joist hangers, unsupported cable conduit and using a rock for support.
Joist hangers require special nails that are rated for proper load, shear and corrosion resistance, and the use of incorrect fasteners can lead to structural failure. Cable conduit under a deck should be properly supported. If additional structural support is required underneath a deck, a rock should never be used.
